Great success for the tenth edition of the event which, since 2004, has been bringing cycling enthusiasts form all over the world to cycle in "Venice Garden".

And for the tenth edition there has been a special guest: rain, which had never shown in Valdobbiadene during the previous nine editions of Prosecco Cycling. But it has been beautiful all the same. A big party with a mix of confetti and songs, bubbles and great guests, cycling enthusiasm and promotion of the territory.

“History is made here”, said Valdobbiadene’s mayor Bernardino Zambon. And his deputy, Pietro Giorgio Davì, the man who when mayor back in 2004 supported the first edition of Prosecco Cycling, has beautifully interpreted the participation of the city by cycling himself, even if he couldn't get to the end because of a physical problem.

Prosecco Cycling’s morning has begun with a cake and ten candles. And cyclists have risen their hands, open, at the start line: ten fingers to symbolize their wish to participate. They have all contributed to writing the tenth page of an event which is a symbol of sport and of a territory which is becoming more and more connected to cycling.

A bang, an explosion of confetti, and the smile of fashion model Francesca Lukasik. Then...go! All together cycling under the rain, into the green hills embroidered by vines, where you never get too tired because the surrounding landscape fills your eyes and your heart. And where, at the end of the most feared ascent, Muro di Ca’ del Poggio, in San Pietro di Feletto, you are welcomed by Olympic gymnastics champion Igor Cassina. A unique endorser for a unique refreshment point with fasolari (smooth clams) and Prosecco, sea and hills together. That is not surprising, at the heart of “Venice garden”. This year also Giro d’Italia has gone along that stretch of road.

Prosecco Cycling has also been a parade of well known guests. Briton Tony Purnell, former managing director of Jaguar and Red Bull Formula 1 teams, now technical consultant for the cycling league of his country, has been very fast and has crossed the finishing line in just over 2 hours (2h08’04”, 28th). And then Olympic boat racing champion, Rossano Galtarossa (2h31’56”, 204th), and the enthusiastic chairman of Villa Sandi, Giancarlo Moretti Polegato (3h06’14”, 460th). “A beautiful race, even under the rain, I’d recommend it to everybody” said Moretti Polegato while crossing the finishing line; he has come back to Prosecco Cycling which had seen his debut as cyclist in 2012.

Figures show that Prosecco Cycling, also thanks to its fruitful partnership with Marca Treviso Tourist Promotion Consortium, is enjoying growing recognition abroad: over 1,700 entrants, from 18 different countries (even if with a higher than usual number of defections due to the bad weather). The end of season race for many cycling enthusiasts, not only Italians, is here: among vines and wineries, ups and downs which are never too hard and the heartfelt hospitality of local people. If you cycle too fast, here you may even win but you would miss the true essence of a Sunday which should be enjoyed with calm, just as one should sip a glass of good Prosecco.

Mark Garnish and David Best have also come from abroad and have been awarded a work of art in Murano glass, as representatives of the large group of entrants (about 70) coming from Great Britain. Then, for everybody, the day has ended with a flourish at Palagusto, the great hall of local wine and food excellencies in the welcoming frame of Villa dei Cedri. While, for foreign entrants, there has been the successful launch of Prosecco Lounge, a restricted area in Piazza Marconi, where languages and ideas have mixed with the bubbles of the best product of Treviso hills to make it all more sparkling. And unforgettable. See you in 2014, with new emotions.
